Today we’re talking about adding more fruit to your diet, and two delicious fruit filled breakfast ideas that are quick and perfect for summer!
It feels like it’s officially summer around here, which for Maryland/DC weather that means HOT HOT HOT and humid as hell. I am surprisingly upbeat about sweating my ass off because we just had an entire month of rain, and my body was seriously craving vitamin D and allll the sunshine. It also means that my favorite food of all time is in season: MELON! I know there are a lot of people who don’t like melon, but I am on the total opposite end of the spectrum. I eat entire cantaloupes and honeydew on my own and will take down anyone that wants to battle in a watermelon eating competition. I simply adore fruit – berries, pineapple, mango, grapes – you name it, and I probably love it.
It’s a lot easier to add more fruit filled breakfasts in the summer time because you have more options based on seasonality and affordability. Organic strawberries were around $7-8 per pound in the winter, and now they’re anywhere from $2-4 per lb! I highly recommend purchasing organic berries whenever possible, especially strawberries because they are on the top of the Dirty Dozen list for contamination.
My favorite fruit filled smoothie includes banana, frozen pineapple, frozen mango and a cup of organic turmeric orange juice. It’s so refreshing and makes me feel like I’m on a tropical vacation (I freaking wish!).
A fun way to increase your fruit intake and something that kids really love is to use a melon or other fruit as a bowl! The easiest fruits to use as bowls are cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, pineapple and papaya. I love adding dairy-free yogurt, fruit and local bee pollen as the filling in cantaloupe bowls. It’s insanely delicious and there are less dishes to wash after breakfast! This also works as a snack after a long day in the sun or even something you can enjoy pool side! I am all about the summer activities right now. I can’t wait until our pool opens and we can spend time teaching the kiddos how to swim!
What are you looking forward to this summer and what are your favorite fruits? Anybody else obsessed with cantaloupe?
