The holiday season is fun and exciting, but also generates a lot of waste. This zero waste and sustainable gift guide has great alternatives for gift giving that are better for the planet and your wallet!
Zero Waste & Sustainable Gift Guide
The holiday season always brings back so many good vibes for me from years of working retail and helping customers shop for their loved ones. There was one thing that always bothered me, and it was hearing people say we need to buy “x” amount of gifts because we need more under the tree than last year. After years and years of witnessing and even helping this unneccessary consumption, I decided to make it a point to show how you can give gifts that are useful, don’t create more waste, and are sustainable for the planet and your wallet.
I really love the idea of zero waste living, especially when it comes to purchasing food. There are so many different ways to buy in bulk, reuse containers, and choose more sustainable brands and ingredients. This can be carried into your work life, how you cook and store food, and even different every day tools that you use in your home.
This zero waste and sustainable gift guide is great for anyone looking to minimize their waste and use more eco-friendly products. Making an effort to change one thing in your life to a more sustainable option can make a huge impact!
Hydro Flask Insulated Bottle – Plastic water bottles and one time use coffee cups are incredibly wasteful and have a huge impact on our landfills. This hydro flask insulated bottle can double as a water bottle or a way to take your coffee on the go! They come in multiple colors, sizes and have different lids. They’re BPA-free and made from stainless steel.
Mason Jar Set – One of my most used and cherished sustainable containers are mason jars. They are incredibly versatile and can be used as containers for bulk grains (just get the tare weight before filling), smoothies, coffee, sauces, salads and anything else that needs to be stored in an air-tight container. They come in a huge range of sizes and will cut down your need for buying pre-packaged foods.
To-Go Ware Reusable Bamboo Utensil Set – This reusable bamboo utensil set is perfect for anyone that eats on the go; commuters, students, etc. Instead of using plastic or even compostable utensils, you can bring these bamboo ones with you and have a zero waste meal. They also have a carabiner and can hook onto your keys or backpack! The outside pouch is made from recycled plastic bottles.
Kombucha Brewing Kit – The perfect kit for the kombucha lover in your life so they can brew their own! I love kombucha, but every time I purchase one I think about how many bottles I’ve used, even though I recycle them. If you brew your own kombucha, you can minimize your waste and reuse the same bottles over and over again!
Coldbrew Kit – If you really want to up your coffee game, you can brew your own at home to save money AND waste. This cold brew kit is perfect for the coffee enthusiast in your life, and it comes with an organic cotton coffee sock. This will eliminate the need for single-use coffee cups from coffee shops, and you can store your home-brewed coffee in a reusable container.
Bamboo Toothbrushes – Traditional toothbrushes are made from plastic and end up in the landfill. Bamboo toothbrushes are made from a sustainable material and can be composted after use.
Stasher Reusable Silicone Food Bags – These incredibly versatile silicone bags are freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe. They have an airtight seal and are perfect for transporting meals and storing them. I use my stasher bags to bring sandwiches and snacks to work and couldn’t be happier with them!
Stainless Steel Composter – A stainless steel composter that helps you compost your kitchen scraps instead of throwing them away. You can even add your compost to your garden to grow your own fruits and vegetables! WIN-WIN!
Happy Holidays! I hope this gives you some inspiration to think about gift giving in a different way. This post does contain affiliate links – thank you for supporting Apollo & Luna and I can’t wait for what’s to come in 2017!
